Zia/Devo Short Track #5 Photos
Iron Horse Bicycle Classic this Weekend
Its back, IHBC weekend, possibly the sweetest week to be a cyclist if your a Durangoan. People come in from all over the country to race the train and conquer goals. Us at Devo are really excited to have the mountain bike race back for its 3rd year since the drought of the mid 2000’s. SO get ready for action starting friday night with your last chance to register for the cross country, criterium and time trail. Reg lasts from 530-730pm and will be at Buckley park in downtown Durango. The road race is saturday morning and if your not racing of volunteering, then get up on the passes and watch some inspired action as they head to Silverton. Then sunday is all day criterium road racing and mountain biking that starts and finishes from downtown. All you Jr Devo’s out there make sure to hit the early am kids racing on main street as it is always tons of fun. The junior mountain bike races and age group categories lead up to the pro race around 2pm, where Devo’s Sweet Elite team will have 3 men and 3 women in the pro race, as well as Ska/Zia-Trek’s 2 junior athletes who also ride on the Devo U19 team. Should be good! The pro criterium will wrap things up with the pro men and women at the same time as the mtb. Wow. And to wrap it all up, the road time trial out the valley takes place on monday for the dedicated trailists. Get your cowbells buffed and we’ll see ya at the races!
Quick Devo Update
Highlights of each group:
Devo Jr: This is our biggest Devo Jr season ever! The coaches this season have been amazing and it has been such a treat for me to bounce around the different groups!
U14/U19: They have already raced at 5 races this year and will be racing in the IHBC this next weekend! State Champs are mid June and we have quite a crew headed to Nationals! Our first Telegraph TT was last Friday and we had tons of the kids break their personal bests!
Explorers: Just got back last night from their 3 day trip to the desert. It was a big trip of 4 coaches and 17 kids! They used their rack and panniers to explore the Valley of the Gods and Mochi Dugway! Lots of smiles and definitely dirty faces!
Flyers: This posse did their trip a couple weeks back to Moab. They rode the 5 star Capt Ahab, Lower Porcupine and, of course, the dirt jump park! These kids are amazing descenders and it is so fun for me to see how the kids cross over from group to group to apply their new skills. Because of Oz’s time with U14, he was killing the technical climbs!
Sweet Elite: Wow, they really have raced every weekend since mid April. 2 riders have been chosen to represent USA in Europe this summer and all will be with Devo at Nationals. Watch for these jerseys on the IHBC race this weekend.
It has been an amazing Spring season and there is still more to come! Here are some more ways to get involved:
*Devo Jr Fun Race at Buckley is May 29th and we’ll have a dunk tank, photo booth and Eliminator Short Track after the kids race. This event is for all of Devo!
*IHBC still needs volunteers! Contact Mel at volunteer@ironhorsebicycleclassic.com
*Coaches Social= Thursday June 6th

The Devo U14/19 boys and girls teams ride from the parking lot of horse gulch to the top of Telegraph Pass once a month throughout the spring/summer season. The riders leave in 1 minute intervals and give it their best shot to the top. This truly hard test produces solid numbers that allow progress to be tracked through out the season, and throughout the years. It has been a part of the Devo program since 2007. Thanks Horse Gulch!
Devo Women’s Ride is so sweet!!!!!

Jr Devo Does Animas Trash Pick
Thanks again girls for showing up to Devo in the rain ready to help and support our Animas River by picking up trash along the banks. Everyone had a colorful rain coat on, thank you parents for helping them have the right gear. We sure found a few interesting items! Ask your girls…. Each of them filled a bag, fortunately we didn’t find as much trash as we thought we would, thats a good thing. Half way through the sun came out and it was beautiful! Love that Colorado weather.
