The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is back for the 2009 season and training has begun with the folks at Iron Horse Training. They provide the answers to all the questions attributed with the 50 mile haul up and over the passes to Silverton. If you need the help or you just want to do it with other cyclists, check here for more information. Plus, it looks like the folk in charge have also added a new event, the Quarter Horse. A shorter version of the race, to Durango Mountain Resort. Sounds good.

There’ s a meeting regarding the development of an Access Control Plan for US 550 (Camino del Rio) between the Doubletree Hotel and the Main Ave. Bridge at Park Ave. The public meeting will be held Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 N. Main Avenue. A presentation about the Camino underpass will take place at 6:30. FYI.

race-6-squawker-cup-results DEVO rider Howard Grotts took his first cyclocross victory on sunday, riding his new used steed masterfully through the mud. The B mens field could not hold off the young lad as his Dad cheered with an echoing voice. Former U-14 rider and upcoming U-19 rider, Elliott Saslow was also on hand, racing to a 12th place finish. Wearing shorts and a t-shirt, Saslow plowed around the mud bog aboard his outgrown Scott carbon, mountain bike, sporting 2.3inch tires. Not necessarily the bike for the mission, but by looks of his smile, it was no cause for concern. After the race, Cortez local Tom Millerman was kind enough to donate his old cross bike to the DEVO program. An Alan carbon frame, Shimano Wheels, Orgin 8 brakes, Ultegra Crank and carbon form were all donated to be built up for future DEVO cross action. Thanks to Tom for his support and good luck to him in his goal of catching Howard at next sundays event.

Sunday December 7th from 4-6pm at the Durango Recreation Center, local road cyclist Carmen Small McNelis will be hosting a fundraiser to help her travel to Europe to live and train, in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. For more information, please check out her blog at www.cmcnellis.blogspot.com.

 “This fundraiser is to help local athlete and Olympic hopeful Carmen Small McNellis to raise money, so she can race this season in Europe. As part of her long term preparation, she intends to race in Europe for the next 4 years leading to the Olympics.  In order to do this successfully, she needs to raise money so she can train full time to reach her full potential.  As a native of Durango, she has always admired how the community supports their athletes and is hopeful that you’ll continue that tradition with her.  “

Last minute things happen. The Squawker Cup #6 has been postponed until 12pm on sunday due to the ice on the FLC campus track. Registration will be at 10:30am. Tell your friends.

Local cyclist and DEVO friend, Anthony Colby, will ride for the professional domestic road team, Colavita/Sutter Home for the 2009 season. After a successful 2008 season, which included a 2nd place overall in the Rally of the Dead, his team asked for him back. Anthony moved here from Massachusetts to attend Fort Lewis College in 1998 and made things happen in 2003 when he won the D-1 short track and cross country collegiate national championships. His most overlooked victory of his career might have been his dominant performance at the 2003 24 Hours of Moab where he rode 207 miles in the day, winning in his first attempt at the endurance event. On the road, Anthony is known for his climbing ability. Click on his name up top there and check out his sweet road results. Overall, when it comes time to shred, Colby can throw down on any bike. Nice work Anthony and good luck in the Tour of California.

Durango Cyclery’s premiere event is back after the rainy cancellation of 2007. Saturday December 6th.

Another nice sunny day drew 70 racers and 100 spectators out to the track as Travis Brown and Teal Stetson-Lee took to the tops. Durango DEVO athletes Howard Grotts and Elliott Saslow placed 3rd and 10th in the B category, the race being Elliott’s first cyclocross race. The Fort Lewis College Cycling teams’ Squawker Cup Cyclocross Series standings have been tabulated after 4 rounds of racing. squawker-cup-points-standings This weekends race on campus begins at 10am in the cyclocross stadium. With a slightly different layout, the course designer Dave Hagen describes his work as a “power course” compared to last weekends technical cornering track. race-5-course-map Last week saw 62 racers on course, which was the biggest local cross showing in the history of our scene. DEVO coaches Chad and Anne spent two tuesdays, November 4th and 18th, with the Kids Kamp program at Sunnyside Elementary School teaching the kids about bicycle safety and basic maintenance. The kids’ ages ranged from 5 to 9 and about 15 total were in attendance each day. It was silly at best and controlled chaos at bestest. The children were eager to tackle the art of bike pumpage, spinning of the wheels, calling us out on our dirty display bikes and always down for being sidetracked with interesting facts about their dad’s bike. Mountain biking became big far after the rules were written on motorized travel in the US forest service parks. Thus after its introduction to the masses, it became lumped in with motor vehicles and other mechanical things. Anyway it looks good. Read this for more.

It was a bright and sunny day. Results4-squawker-cup-results DEVO U-19er Howard Grotts just got his first cross bike and rode it to a second place finish in the B category race. Nice work!

The season has taken over, thus forcing us to rest our legs until 2009. Well not really, but tonight’s ride has been cancelled as a result. Jr DEVO will have to meet again, April, 2009. Have a nice winter.

Wednesday at 1030am, Altitude sports network, channel 83 will be airing CrossVegas, the sweet cross race that drew 15 thousand spectators to last months season opener. The half hour broadcast will also air Thursday morning at 230am. Check it out, Lance did it.
