DEVO Alumni Tad Elliott Makes Worlds Team

Two Durango athletes, DEVO alum Tad Elliott and superstar Todd Wells made the cut to represent the US squad at the World Championships in Austrailia. Props to them. Props also should be given to U19 ladies team member Kaila Hart. A sport racer last season, Kaila made it a goal to make the team for her last year as a junior racer. She had two races to prove her worth and she did just that by placing 3rd at the US National Champs in Granby and 3rd in Vermont last weekend. In Granby she was in 2nd place going into the final lap, only to be chased down by junior Boulder honch, Jill Behlen and then in Vermont was in 5th place and threw down a last effort to get the 3rd spot. Kaila worked very hard all year and her accomplishments are not overshadowed by the fact that the US team did not select her. We know it is not about being picked or not, it is about the development and the life experiences learned along the way, that is what it is all about. Nice work Kaila and good luck to those of you who did get picked.

Weekend Update

Snowmass was a sweet circus with Lance on site. He put on quite a show and took a big win over Colorado’s strongman, Jay Henry. Dang he is fast in person. Also fast in person were the Blevins’. Kaylee took the win in the 14 and under girls and Chris took the mountain cross. Wispers were heard as he flew over the massive double jumps with ease. “Who’s the new kid?”, they were probably asking. Gino Pastore took a 2nd in cat 1, Elliott Saslow took a 3rd in the cat 2, River Weiss took 7th in the u14 boys  and Annie Cheeney took a 3rd in the cat 2 women. Then in the downhill on sunday, Coach Evan Elliott had his best finish as a pro, taking 27th place of 70 pro men. U-19er Taylor Borucki had a bad line and flatted and fellow teammate Kyle Horn placed 22nd in the cat 1 men and Gino Pastore took 14th in the cat 2 men. Then in the super D, Coach Chad took 3rd in the open men, Gino 2nd and Elliott Saslow 4th in the u18 race.

About 6 hours away in Dolores, Colorado, DEVO athletes Stephan Davoust and Emily Schaldach each won the cat 2 junior race. FLC coach won the race and looked to have beaten the course record by 3 minutes, earning him an extra $100. The previous record was held by DEVO board member TBrown, who took 2nd today. The female pro race was won by FLC cyclist, Teal Stetson-Lee.

Then Like 30 hours from there in Vermont, DEVO’s Kaila Hart took on the fast girls of the east and placed 3rd in the Pro XCT race. Teammate Alicia Rose haad to bail after her derailuer ripped off. Todd Wells placed 3rd, Rotem Ishay was 8th, and Andy Shultz placed 10th. Nice work Durango.

Women's Mountain Bike Clinic w/ Elke and Sarah

Calling all women mountain bikers and those wishing to be women mountain bikers (cross-dressers need to be approved by our committee before partaking!)….this is the last chance to learn mountain bike skills from Elke Brutsaert and Sarah Tescher.  Aug. 22nd from 9 am– 1 pm will be our last clinic of the season for all levels of riders.  From 12- 1pm, we will be visited by local female mountain biker, mom of 3, and pilates teacher Lyra Parker to go over pilates for cycling.   This is a low intimidation clinic for all women who just want to feel more comfortable riding and to learn skills from Elke, a 2009 National Champion, and Sarah, a mom of 2 and local racer.  IGNORE the posters around town tauting this as a race clinic…it is not a race clinic although we may be able to convince Elke to teach us all how to jump!

Pre-reg online at www.durangomountainbikecamp.com or just head into Mountain Bike Specialist.  10% of proceeds go to the Fort Lewis Female Cycling Team!  More info?  Just call Sarah at 779-8480 or email.

Lance In Snowmass

The latest rumor is that Tour de France bronze medalist, Lance Armstrong will be on the line at the MSC race this weekend in Snowmass. The source for this rumor said he’d be racing pro xc on saturday and possibly dh on sunday. That would be wild. DEVO has several athletes making the trip this weekend, Chris Blevins, Gino Pastore and River Weiss. Good luck to you and have fun watching Lance shred the dirt.
