Brendan Shafer will be the head coach of the AHS and DHS mountain bike team this Fall. Practices start Monday Aug 27th from 4:15-6:15 meeting at the rec center. Practices will be much like our u14/u19 practices. Both AHS and DHS students will practice together, but they will ride for their schools! (we need 5 from each school to pull that off).

The team will travel with Sarah Tescher in the Devo van to 2 team races Sept 9th in Nathrop and Oct 21st for State Championships (location TBA).

You do NOT have to race to practice with this team. If you think you will be traveling to a race or two, you will need to register with the Colorado League. Here is the link: www.coloradomtb.org. I need to invite you so you’ll have to wait for that email. The registration in the Colorado League is called “PitZone.”

In Nathrop, we will be camping and more info will follow, but I will need a head count of athletes and parents to reserve the camp spot by next Wednesday.

After playing to sold-out houses in London, New York, L.A., and Chicago, The Bicycle Men are riding into Colorado. They are bringing their critically-acclaimed show to the Durango Arts Center for a special limited run. The Bicycle Men is a sublimely silly musical comedy about a hapless American tourist who crashes his bike and encounters the twisted inhabitants of a quaint French village.

Written by Dave Lewman, Joe Liss, John Rubano and composer Mark Nutter, performed by Joe Liss, John Rubano, Neill Chambers, Bruce Green and Derek Manson. The Bicycle Men runs August 15th through the 19.

Directions: Take Hwy 160, past the Giant gas station to the big metal bridge on your right. Go over bridge, turn left and head up road 1/4 mile to the red Trails 2000 truck.
Bring/Wear: Closed toe shoes, long shirts and pants, hat, sunscreen and water.

The second race in the Big Mountain Enduro Series is coming to Durango August 31-September 2, with the race taking place on Sunday. This new format of racing encourages spectator and sponsors alike to catch the high-speed, adrenaline-fueled action of cross country and downhill mountain biking—combined. It isn’t about who is the first to the climb, or who can drop the sickest line—it is about the best all-around trail rider that can tackle any type of terrain, the fastest. Enduro racing turns an epic all-day ride into the ultimate test of fitness and technical skills.

This race will be from the top of Kennebec Pass (Colorado Trail) to the bottom of Dry Fork trail, just west of Durango. The race will be an individual time trial start with riders leaving the start in 1 minute intervals. The trail descends for 6.2 miles on some of the most amazing single track in the state of Colorado. After this first descent it reaches the bridge crossing on Junction Creek. From where the clock starts again at High Point, the race will descend down to the Dry Fork Trail where the races will follow it to the trail head near Lightner Creek road. Dry Fork is a a mix of old two track road that has been closed for years and single track. This section is wide open fast and fun with rocky sections and bermed single track turns.

Elevation loss on the course is approximately 5,400 feet over 13.5 miles in two stages.

There will be two mandatory sections that must be ridden, but will be UNTIMED—the first being from where the shuttle drops you off to the start of the race, and is approximately 5 miles and 2,200′ of climbing. The second climb in the middle of the course, from the Junction Creek crossing at the bridge to the top of High Point, and is approximately 4 miles. There will be time constraints, but don’t worry they will be VERY attainable. This just ensures people won’t be stopping to take a nap on the side of the trail.

Event headquarters will take place at Second Avenue Sports for registration/check-in on Friday and Saturday and at Ska Brewery for the rider’s meeting on Saturday afternoon, meeting for the shuttle on Sunday morning and post-race party and festivities.

Bicycle races at the Irish Embassy Pub to coincide with the Pro Cycling Challenge

Picture it: four racers at a time for ten minute race lengths – on a stage upstairs in the Embassy, in the window overlooking Main Ave. For those interested in riding, slots will be filled starting at 8pm, with four riders every 15 minutes. The cost is $5 to participate, with all proceeds benefiting the Fort Lewis College Cycling Team. Each participant will receive a complimentary beer. According to Wikipedia, bicycle rollers are a type of bicycle trainer that make it possible to ride a bicycle indoors without moving forward. However,unlike other types of bicycle trainers, rollers do not attach to the bicycle frame, and the rider must balance him or herself on the rollers while training. Durango’s history of roller races started back in 1990 with many of the town’s national and world champions competing over the years. The current record is near 44 mph average, but according to Fort Lewis College Cycling Team Director Dave Hagen, “someone is bound to beat it this year or throw up trying.”

“I hope that we get a lot of competitors signed up; it’s really a fun event,” said owner Phil Brennan. Winners will receive a $100 gift card to the Irish Embassy for first place, $50 gift card for second place, and $25 gift card for third place.

Arrive early for a special autograph signing from Team Garmin-Sharp-Barricuda (USA), including Durango’s own Thomas Danielson. Other team members include Tyler Farrar (USA), Nathan Haas (AUS), Alex Howes (USA)

Past Results

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) hosting the USA Pro Cycling Challenge has invited DEVO to participate in the Opening Ceremonies on Monday, August 20th.  The ceremonies are meant to celebrate the Olympic, National and World Champions who call Durango home. DEVO athletes will participate to show the next generation of cyclists. We are hoping for 200 athletes 12 and under to participate with the U19, U14, Flyers and Explorer riders as the sweep riders. Olympic cyclists will lead out the parade and other local Olympians in a variety of sports will be participating in this event. This is not an open parade, due to road closures and a restrictions and to aid in the planning of such a huge event in Durango, this portion of the Pro Cycling Challenge event is an invitation only event.

The race itself will take place on Monday, August 20th. The entire weekend is full of events from a Grand Open House downtown on Main, the Start Village at Fort Lewis College on Saturday and Sunday, the mountain bike and trail run race at Twin Buttes (on August 18th) hosted by Trails 2000 and the Race Day party at Buckley on August 20th.
