Good luck and best wishes to the Bicycle Works Junior Cycling Team from Texas as they prepare for Nationals in Granby, this July 16th. The team is in Colorado for the month to prepare for the competition. DEVO team members rode with the Texan lads these past 2 weeks and they also competed in several of the local AOA SHort Tracks.
DEVO U14er Henry Larson and family are at the White House. This is the first reported DEVO athlete to land on the historic site. Rich, Henry’s Dad has reported a hot and muggy day in DC. Henry’s teammates are in Crested Butte this weekend for their team race #3 of the season. The team will miss you Henry.

The sun shown bright and the first race went off like magic at 9am, the first wave was the Beginner and Sport category Men and Women. A mass start circuit course was built this past month by Trails 2000 on the base area hill around the six-pack, including a well done pump track which nestles just past the Durango Coca-Cola Bike Park entrance arch. The race lap times ranged from just over 2.5 minutes to 5. This being the first race in the Durango Coca-Cola Triple Crown NedFurtado Circuit Race.
There were a fair share of spills out on the chicane section at the end of the lap. This is where the most of the finish line fans congregated, an easy to spectate area with views of 87% of the 1.1 mile lap. At one point, Beginner male 3rd place finisher wiped out on a corner and at the very same time, his mother and Beginner female winner took an identical spill, both walked away unhinged. In the pro/ex race, race leader Joey Thompson flatted on lap 1, missing a lap and making his way from the back of the pack to 11th place.
The kids race had some sweet racing with both winners earning their victorious medals on last lap attacks. Winners of each category were awarded day passes to Durango Mountain Resort and this was cool. 2 guys from Monteray, Mexico who didnt win had a pretty sweet battle in the pro/expert race, smiling all the way around. U14 coach Annie won the sport race and so did River Weiss for the boys.
In the pro/expert womens race it was DEVO Director, Sarah Tescher with the win on a mid race attack over junior speedster, Alicia Rose Pastore and U14 coach Jess Reed. And crushing the final half of the race to win was Todd Wells, looking smooth as the new pump track at DMR, Todd broke away from Joey Thompson, then his brother Troy, then Nick Gould by the 4th lap only to hold off the surging Howard Grotts, U19 Devo crusher. Then to make a late race of the thing, Nick pulled off a last lap pass on a recently injured Trevor Downing.
A big thanks to all the cycling fan companies we have in the area. Thanks Durango Coca-Cola for supporting this series and same to DMR for the hard work coordinating all of us cycling groups. Timing was on point and pro by 4 Corners Timing. To the trail builders who showed up and helped out Trails 2000 with the construction and thanks to the dirt for being as sweet as we all remember it being years ago when it was being shredded upon by the worlds best, in the sports heyday.
full results from 4 Corners Timing soon
Devo Director Sarah Tescher will be attending the National Interscholastic Cycling Association’s 2010 Leaders Summit to break down the ins and outs of high school mountain bike racing coaching and training techniques. Colorado has entered the high school racing scene and is trying to build up a solid number of teens to take part in the inaugural season this fall. Devo founders Sarah and Chad would like to see this cycling team take form in Durango and are willing to help out. An unknown number will take part in the training and it just has to be a good thing for junior cyclers everywhere.
