Tour de Ski by Elliott Saslow

The morning started like any other race morning.  I  got up early, and my sister and I had to start at 9:30.  It was unfortunately rainy, so we all crossed our fingers hoping it was snowing in the mountains, and went up to the ski area. When we got up to the ski area was when the race morning started to become unfamiliar.  Usually we nordic ski at the base of a ski area but this time we took a lift up to the top.  For this  race we were going to ski at the top of the mountain rater than the bottom.  I met up with the other guys on the team including Sepp, Gino, Haakon Samualson, and Gunther. The lift ride up was probably the worst part of the day  because we were becoming cold and wet.  Most people didn’t bring extra gloves so their fingers froze.  After we got off of the freezing lift we skied about 100 yard to reach the start area.  We did a slight warm up, and while we broke trail through 2 inches of  new wet snow.  As we got back to the start people commented on how the leader would have to break trail in a white out.  About ten minutes after we all got back the 42k race started.  Leading the race was Ben Sontag, but everyone was close behind.  Second to go was the 20k.  Rogan Brown and Lars Elefson led that race out of the start.  Gino, Sepp, Gunther, Ben, and I all prepared for our 14k race.  Out of the start Gino Pastore and Haakon Samualson led the pack.  About 3 minutes later all the youger racers left.  That rac was led by Hannah Madden and Stephanie Ogier.  During this time out on the race course Ben Sontag and our coach Josh Dailey were leading the 42k.  At the same time Rogan and lars had a large break away.  The 14k  Gino and Sepp also were leading by a lot.  The 6k was led by Hannah Madden.

After people started coming into the finish most said they had a fantastic time.  We went down to the bottom of the resort, and had a gourmet meal made by RGP’s.  During the awards ceremony Avra Saslow won a new pair of boots in a raffle and other people won fantastic prizes for placing.  I know I can’t wait for it to happen again and I bet other people feel the same way.

Animas Orthopedic/ Durango DEVO Short Track Series

Durango DEVO’s popular summer short track series is in search of a title sponsor for the 2009 season. The 10 race series takes place every wednesday night at 6pm from June through August. The venue changes throughout the series and new ideas are always appreciated. Short Track racing is a mountain bike race around a 2-6 minute dirt track circuit. It is a timed event with competitors racing from 15-30 minutes total depending on skill level. This style of racing was introduced in the early 2000’s to draw spectators back to the big race venues, and it has become a popular spectating event since. The DEVO series was a great cycling addition to the community last season as it saw the junior racers get the opportunity to have fun training next to their older cycling professionals and peers. Please contact chad@durangodevo.com if you would like to be a part of this sweet cycling action.

Tour de Ski is Next

It is ski season for sure, not bikes, so head up to Durango Mountain Resort next saturday, January 24th and ski. Sign up can be done at Pine Needle, Backcountry Experience and Active.com. The race course takes the skiers through the Hermosa Valley, on the backside of the mountain, and for a super bonus ending, leaves the racers at the top of lift 4 to descend back to the base. We have been told by the promoter, Jeanne Pastore, that this event is for everybody, not just skate studs. There are several distances offered, at 6k, 12k, 22k and the epic 42k. If you would like to volunteer, call Jeanne at 385-4571. The race is a benefit for Trails2000, so grab your skates and don’t be lates.

  • The women’s team was on the top spot all season with Alicia Rose winning all the races she entered but one and Kaila, Joan and Hannah taking the top three spots overall in the MSCup series. With Coach Kricket at the helm, this team exemplified what it means to have fun and be fast. Their off the bike hang outs and their attention to detail during practice made for an excellent model of what it means to be a team.
  • Taylor Borucki accomplished his goal of making the US Worlds team for downhill this past season, but it was his attitude during his recovery from a badly timed broken ankle that has earned him this award. Taylor kept a positive attitude in spite of missing his chance at racing in Italy in early June. His teammates were lucky to witness his recovery as he kept active throughout, within his sport and his team.

Alicia Rose and Tad Tackle Alaska

DEVO U19 ladies team member, Alicia Rose Pastore and alumni Tad Elliott stepped it up a notch this past weekend in Alaska at the USA Cross Country Ski National Championships. Elliott was the first under-23 competitor across the line and took the very title he earned in mid 2008, on the bike. The finish earned him a spot on the USA World Cup Team. Also earning a shot at overseas competition, Alicia Rose finished 6th in the Jr. National Championships 10k classic race and will race in Scandinavia later this winter.
